Ashley Hall Statement on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging
We celebrate that our community is built on the strengths and talents of every student, teacher, parent, alumna, and staff member, and that every individual in the Ashley Hall community has a unique and valuable contribution to make to our collective pursuit of integrity and academic excellence. We believe that our differences contribute to a more purposeful campus discourse that honors and includes many perspectives and that an authentic sense of belonging depends on building a culture of agency, trust, and respect. Furthermore, we assert that diversity that is inclusive and woven into the fabric of our School is essential to achieving educational and academic excellence. Thus, we strive to cultivate a community that values and embodies inclusivity, equity, respect, belonging, and engagement.
For over a century, Ashley Hall has lived into its mission: to produce educated women who are independent, ethically responsible, and prepared to meet the challenges of society with confidence. As we guide our students toward a complex and challenging 21st century world, we hold as an imperative that our community must embrace cross-cultural competencies in order that we may use our diversity as a strength in guiding us toward a shared set of values, skills, and behaviors. Our seven Hallmarks—Worldly, Discerning, Intelligent, Compassionate, Creative, Purposeful, and Collaborative—inspire us in this endeavor.
We acknowledge that the effort towards greater diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging demands more than a commitment to avoid practices centered in racism and holds as imperative that we actively work to dismantle systemic racism and confront bias and inequalities. We collectively commit ourselves to active learning and listening through an inclusive Learning Spiral, ongoing professional development for faculty and staff, and the emphasis on student experiences which foster connections and deep reflection as a means of cultivating respect and equity in our community. We assert the need to dedicate resources and intentional spaces to encourage a more diverse and culturally-rich community. We acknowledge that our efforts are a work in progress, and as dedicated life-long learners, we pledge our time, talent, and resources to engaging deeply and sincerely in the pursuit of equity, engagement, and respect.
